India was recognised with two awards at the beginning of World Travel Market 2011, picking up the best destination title as well as an accolade for the best marketing campaign.
The country’s tourism minister, Sri Subodh Kant Sahai, accepted the awards and also announced plans for the first Global Travel Mart in India.
Scheduled for December 12th 2012, the event will welcome government and industry representatives from around the world to the Asian nation and underline its commitment to boosting its profile in the global tourism industry.
Visitor numbers are already on the increase in India, with ten per cent more travellers visiting the country between January and October this year than in the same period in 2010.
The government has set itself a target of doubling guest numbers by 2013 and capturing one per cent of the international tourism market by 2016.
An extra 400,000 hotel rooms are set to be made available to meet growing demand.
During his visit to WTM 2011, Mr Sahai took a tour of the Incredible India stand, which covers some 21,000 square feet and showcases more than 170 companies, including hospitality chains such as Taj Hotels, Lalit and Park Hotels.
